The spherical Philips GP-400 was the entry level member of the Philips SUPER-M high strength magnet series. All members of the series, which also comprised the elliptical GP-401 and GP-412 and the SST shaped GP-422, shared the same generator structure and physical shape and can therefore use the same styli. Please find the most direct replacements as well as the best upgrade options listed below.

946/D60 Stylus for Philips GP-400

The Philips 946/D60 was the standard replacement stylus suggested for the GP-400. It carried a spherical tip with a 15 micrometer diameter and the recommended tracking force was 1.5g - 3g. Original styli are no longer available and below we list the most direct spherical replacements options.

Upgrade stylus for Philips GP-400

The body/generator structure of the SUPER-M family is really quite good. Fine results can be obtained by coupling it with more advanced and/or modern stylus types. The replacements suggested for the more sophisticated members of the SUPER-M family are all good upgrade options, but The JICO SAS fine-line stylus suggested below is really the ultimate upgrade for the GP400 SUPER-M family. The recommended tracking force is 1g - 1.5g with 1.25g as the suggested optimum. The Shibata is not nearly as good, but very price-worthy.

Mono Stylus for Philips GP-400

If you want to use your GP-400 for 78RPM mono you will need a special large diameter spherical mono stylus. No originals are available but you can use the replacement suggested below.

Some later Philips cartridges were also compatible with the SUPER-M styli. Besides the GP-401, GP-412, and GP-422 the GP-400 needles are therefore also compatible with the GP-413, GP-421, and GP-500.
